SYNOPSIS

A Chief Petty Officer in a Naval Yard briefs a group of Naval Command cadets on a salvage mission. He warns his charges that parts from the yard have already been stolen for reasons unknown. One cadet, Midshipman Windette, is in the process of locating his particular part when a Diver attacks him. When the Chief Petty Officer finally locates his lifeless body, the part he was sent to retrieve has also disappeared.

Graeme Hurry, Head of Security at corporate bankers Kamen and Ross, briefs the Gizmos team. He believes an ex-bank employee, Brian Brody and his wife Juliet are trying to instigate a massive fraud, but does not know exactly how. He knows it has something to do with McTiernan, an ex Naval Diver who has been stealing naval parts from Marine Command. Ros suggests that the team should check out McTiernan’s mobile home for information: to get him away from the caravan Beckett poses as a Financial Advisor, to whom McTiernan believes he is visiting to discuss the potential investment of a large sum of money. Ed is then sent to search the mobile home. However, a slip from Beckett ruins the deception and McTiernan shoots him as he leaves: Beckett is only saved by his conveniently placed transmitter! Ed is forced to hide in a water tower as McTiernan arrives back early, and watches as Brian and Juliet Brody arrive to confront the diver, who has asked for more money. Whilst this exchange takes place, Ed finds his hiding place is also that of the stolen naval parts. Deciding not to negotiate, Juliet emotionlessly shoots McTiernan, and her husband dumps the body in the water tower…but before they can search for the naval components Ros and Beckett arrive, forcing them to flee.

Hurry tries to convince the Kamen and Ross board of the danger from the Brody’s, but they are unimpressed with the evidence. In the meantime Beckett, posing as a colleague of McTiernan’s called Bailey, contacts Brian and sets up a meeting, with Ed along as protection. They convince Brody they are genuine with a faked photo of the two of them with McTiernan, and Brody offers them a piece of his plan: to remove £250 million from Kamen and Ross, tax-free. Ros follows the pair to a chartered boat with the naval parts, where they meet Juliet. The two load the boat and get underway, Ros tracks their progress using a powerful transmitter attached to Ed’s coat. The boat stops well away from shore, and suddenly a submarine surfaces from under them! Brian is on board the ex-Soviet diesel sub, which forms the basis of his plan. As the submarine dives with Beckett and Ed aboard Ros loses their signal: when the two do not arrive back with Juliet on the boat, Ros plants a bug on her as she leaves. Searching the boat Juliet chartered, Ros finds the pilot dead.

Brian’s true purpose becomes clear. The submarine’s previous use was as an underwater drilling machine: Brody intends to locate and connect to a submerged telecommunications cable, intercepting an outgoing routine money transfer from Kamen and Ross. Beckett sets Ed to work on fixing the marine parts, which form a pump to prevent the submarine from flooding when drilling. Ros follows Juliet to an unnamed building, where she is quickly escorted away by the building’s Security Guard. Her husband is at the same time setting up his computer equipment after Ed has fixed the pump.

Graeme Hurry identifies the building Ros followed Juliet to as belonging to Jacobs Doyle, a City business that deals exclusively in diamonds. As Hurry’s boss knows of no link between the two companies he turns down Hurry’s request to continue investigating…despite the fact that Ed and Beckett are missing. The sub stops to refuel on the Dutch coast: Ed is sent ashore to siphon the diesel and slips away to try and contact Ros using the long-range transmitter. Brody intercepts his transmission on the sub’s radio, and tries to shoot Ed from the sub: instead he hits and ignites the diesel. Realising his cover is blown, Beckett evades capture inside the sub and tries to find a hiding place. Ed surfaces, having jumped into the dock to avoid being shot and his signal re-appears on Ros’ tracking system at the Gizmos warehouse, just as Hurry arrives to help her in pursuit of the Brodys.

Ed and Ros discuss the situation by ‘phone: Ed believes Brody will scuttle the ship and make a getaway in an inflatable boat as soon as he has completed his task. Ed enlists the assistance of a Dutch Minesweeper in his efforts to try and locate Brody’s position, to whom Ros faxes her estimate on where Brody is heading. Meanwhile, Beckett has been found and is handcuffed to a pipe, where he watches Brody put his plan into action. He creates a phoney transaction, intercepting a routine Money Transfer between Kaman and Ross and a German bank, making each side believe the transaction has been completed…but he sends the money to Jacobs Doyle instead, and uses it to buy diamonds. Ros realises too late what Brody is up to, and tries to cancel the transaction, but to no avail. Beckett tries to pull the computers power cable away with his foot, but only serves to disable the submarine’s pump. Brody locks the crew into their compartment and makes a hasty getaway, as Beckett struggles to free himself from the rapidly filling chamber. Ed thinks they’ve found the sub with Sonar, but the Dutch Lieutenant believes it’s the wreck of an old Oil Tanker. Juliet arrives at Jacobs Doyle to collect her diamonds, with her husband not far behind: the sight of Brody’s dinghy appearing on radio convinces Ed that the Dutch Lieutenant could have been mistaken…rushing back to the site he dives in search of the sub.

Ros is hot on Juliet’s heels and convinces Jacobs Doyle’s security that a fraud is in progress. Alerted to the crime in the Vault, Juliet grabs the diamonds and shoots everyone in sight…she bumps into Ros whilst escaping and takes her as a hostage to the car park. Brian is waiting, but on the other side of the security barrier that lowered when the building’s alarms went off. Ed finds the Oil tanker. Brian persuades Juliet to part with the diamonds, but Ros persuades her he’ll simply leave her…enraged and panicky, she shoots him and is overpowered by Security guards. Ros spots Brian’s GPS Satellite positioning device, and uses it to tell Ed, via the Dutch Frigate, where the sub is lying. Just moments before the water in the cabin passes his head, Ed rescues Beckett with a handy pair of bolt clippers.

Returning home, Ed and Ros have a present for Beckett: wet, cold and bubbly. Beckett thinks it’s champagne, but it turns out to be a goldfish in a bowl…
