SYNOPSIS

In a damp and disused factory two men are testing explosives on a large container. The first explosion is noisy and effective, but the second explosion doesn’t make a sound, thanks to the use of a sophisticated noise suppressor. The man who operates the equipment, Da Silva, impresses his companion who offers twice his "fee" to obtain a compound, which he simply refers to as R6. The R6 is stored at Millennium Metals under less than tight security: Da Silva has a man on the inside, Wallis, who lets him in before Da Silva knocks him out. However, the guards suspect nothing as moments later Wallis, now fit and well, appears on a security monitor. Da Silva uses a "silent" explosion to enter the main compound: he can mask the noise, but not the force of the explosion which alerts the suspicion of the guards and prevents Da Silva from stealing any R6 from the compound…

Kent, the head of a Government department, who had intended to use R6 as a highly effective superconductor, briefs Beckett on the break in. Millennium Metals (where the R6 is manufactured) was licensed by the Government to carry out metal research, and whilst developing R6 had discovered a worrying additional property. Ros and Ed meanwhile have discovered that the "recording" of Wallace on the tape the night before was deliberately fed into the signal to deceive the guards. Kent asks Vermeer, the head of Millennium Metals to show the team why R6 is so dangerous. Using a wineglass as an example, it transpires that if exposed to the correct resonant frequency R6 is highly volatile and leaves no trace once it explodes…making for a potent and powerful weapon. Kent is concerned that security is not tight enough, and asks the Team to improve it. Ros sets to work on augmenting the security cameras with Ed’s help, who notices a building opposite Millennium with security cameras, which could have witnessed the blast. The pretty receptionist at the building prompts Ed to ask whether there is access to the tapes: she refuses to allow him a look at the recording, but tells him that the tapes are changed daily at 8.00pm. Later that night, with Ros and Beckett’s help, Ed scales the side of the building and plants a box on the main camera allowing Ros to speed-record the days tape for their use. The tape yields the results they have hoped for: there is an explosion, but two guards standing directly in front of it do not register the blast: the explosion was silent. Ros knows that a lot of work has been done on noise suppression: it seems now to be possible to transmit a sound wave with the negative frequency as the explosion, allowing one to cancel out the other. The security tape answers another question concerning the break-in: Wallis, the guard now in hospital after being knocked out, let the assailant into Millennium Metals. Beckett goes to see him: he is still unconscious, and this allows Beckett the opportunity to plant 2 bugs on him: one on his shirt and the other in his bag. Da Silva too is in the Hospital to see Wallace but his intent is to dispose of him, under the guise of a Doctor. A nurse alerts Beckett to his presence, and a tussle ensues, during which a mini-tape recorder Beckett is carrying is activated. Da Silva manages to get away, but Beckett uses the tape recording inadvertently made of his voice to identify him, with Ros’ help. Knowing now that Da Silva is a ruthless mercenary Beckett goes to see Kent, to ensure there’s R6 ONLY at Millennium Metals. He sends Ros and Ed to Vermeer to tell him it was an inside job, and to find out whom else knows about R6’s existence. Vermeer tells the pair about Charlesworth, the head of the Research team who discovered R6 by accident, and who was sacked from Millennium when he was refused authority to develop it as a weapon. Da Silva meanwhile is using "silent" explosions to break into the Research Facility where Kent’s department is attempting to stabilise R6. Beckett is chastising Kent for the less than adequate security, whilst downstairs Da Silva has taken a sample of R6…on his escape he runs into the pair and shoots Kent…

Ed is finishing the final security modifications at Millennium Metals when Ros hears (via Beckett’s bug) that Wallace has checked himself out of hospital. She and Beckett pursue him to a hotel, where Wallace meets Da Silva. Listening in at an upstairs room they hear him angrily asking Da Silva why he was knocked out, and hear Charlesworth urge Da Silva to ensure there are no more complications to their plan. Beckett instructs Ed (who has just arrived at the hotel) to trail a departing Charlesworth: the sound of gunfire brings sends the pair to Da Silva’s room where they find Wallace dead. Da Silva narrowly avoids their attention and makes his escape, but with Wallace’s bag in his hand it is an easy task to track him, until he dumps it…Fortunately Ed has followed Charlesworth to a riverside warehouse, and it is not long before Da Silva also arrives. Beckett urges Ed to get a bug on the pair without any "heroics"…inside Charlesworth urges Da Silva to remove ALL the R6 from Millennium Metals, as the batch from the Research Facility has already been partially stabilised. Da Silva detects Ed’s presence outside the window and uses the sound suppressor to block his bug. Back at Millennium Metals to check everything is functioning correctly Beckett and Ros can’t believe the bug is non-functional: this spurs Ed into entering the building where he is promptly captured…

Ros is justifiably proud at the improvements she has made at Millennium Metals, and Beckett concedes it would be impossible to steal the R6…as there is no R6 left in the vault to steal. It transpires that Vermeer has loaded all of the R6 into a truck on the supposed orders of Kent, something she flatly denies as she arrives at Millennium. Beckett asks Kent if she believes Charlesworth and Vermeer are acting together, but their mutual hatred of each other makes this an impossibility. Vermeer is out to take the R6 for himself, and once he disposes of the security guard he was forced to take with him at a snack bar, he makes an escape. Da Silva is extolling the virtues of R6 to Ed, when Charlesworth hears Ros on Ed’s headset telling them about Vermeer’s escape. Leaving to pursue the truck of R6 Da Silva straps Ed to a chair surrounded by movement sensors. Tripping them will activate a sound generator which will transmit the frequency required to activate the R6’s explosive properties, and as a backup Da Silva has set up an answering machine that will play the same tone if he ‘phones the correct number. Ros and Kent are airborne, trying to trace Vermeer from the air: Beckett has conned his way into the main Traffic Control Centre, and once it is confirmed that Vermeer has stolen the van it doesn’t take long to locate him. Surmising that with R6’s volatile qualities it’s more likely Vermeer would head for the coast than for an airport it is an easy task to track him…Ros also manages to get a bug on board the truck from the helicopter. Ed meanwhile is desperately trying to escape his prison, and uses the ceiling beams to climb his way up and across the room he’s trapped in. Charlesworth realises that Vermeer isn’t heading for the coast but for the river, as he has a boat, and is able to take a short cut to intercept him. Beckett, now on the road isn’t far behind them, with Ros and Kent behind him…Ros asks whether Beckett has heard from Ed. Ed is still struggling to climb his way out of the warehouse, and almost blows himself up with some loose change from his pocket!

Vermeer arrives at his boat to find Da Silva and Charlesworth waiting for him: as the pair argue Da Silva tells Vermeer that he has no intention of sharing R6’s financial gains with anyone else…

Beckett arrives to an apparently deserted scene, but checking the back of the van he discovers Da Silva, Charlesworth and a dead Vermeer…and has a gun held to him. Ros and Kent arrive and Da Silva threatens to kill Ed if they don’t do as he asks. Forced to load the R6 into Da Silva’s car Da Silva (having already dialed the telephone number on his mobile) still presses the "Send" button: a scuffle ensues and the phone is tossed away. Charlesworth grabs the gun and shoots Da Silva at point blank range, but it is too late to stop the phone call. Ed manages to get out of the warehouse just as the answering machine activates and the whole building goes up. In a fit of rage Beckett is about to shoot Charlesworth when his ‘phone rings: it’s Ed, who asks if he’s missed anything….

Back at Gizmos Kent presents the team with a silver sculpture (which resembles R6) as an addition to their fee. Ed begins to wax lyrical about his escape from the warehouse and how it reminds him of a dangerous climbing experience. Ros finds a new use for Da Silva’s sound suppressor, effectively silencing Ed…
