SYNOPSIS

Inside a high-tech power station owned by the NRGen Corporation, a group of visitors are being shown around the flagship of Split Isotope Fusion: an energy source both safe and pollution free, according to the Tour Guide... A nervous-looking scientist watches as the party passes the Primary Core of the Station. Passing through the Engineering Division, Ros stops to thank her friend Alex for getting her on the tour, but is a little disappointed she’s not able to see how everything really works. Alex promises her a proper "behind the scenes" look after he has delivered schematics to the Control Room…Meanwhile, outside the station a van enters as our "nervous" scientist cuts the connections to the outside world. The van is full of terrorists, who quickly gain entry to the Plant and disable everything…including the Control Centre. One of their numbers is in the Tour Party: she quickly shoots the Guide and kidnaps the party. An amazed Ros, who is hiding, watches the entire scene…

Back at Gizmos Ed and Beckett are testing a number of super-miniaturised transmitters, hidden in 2 coins. Their conversation is interrupted by an unexpected explosion, which blows off the front of their door…in walks Kanin, who works for NRGen, and tells the boys about Ros’ predicament. He has bought equipment that allows the pair access to NRGen’s Headquarters, so that any message sent to the plant will come now through to Gizmos. Inside the plant Ros manages to avoid being detected, whilst at Gizmos the terrorists make contact. Their leader is the woman who shot the Tour Guide, Pascal, who claims to represent the Pro-Earth People’s Front. Their demands are straightforward: stop building split isotope plants, declare they are a dead end technology and give profits from the company towards waste and recycling. She gives the team 12 hours, and when Beckett enquires about the hostages the deadline is cut to ten hours. As a further demonstration of power Pascal cuts the entire Metropolitan Power Grid, sending everything into darkness. At the Plant, Ros finds the hostages, and a means to talk to Alex, who is amongst them, without the guards knowing…

Checking NRGen schematics of the building, Ed and Beckett find an emergency escape tunnel leading right through to the Station. Ros climbs down a ventilation shaft and talks to Alex through a grille: he sends her to Security to try and re-establish pictures from the Control Centre, and gives her his Security pass for easier access. Ed reaches the exit tunnel: disguised as a Flood Barrier he gains entry and drives up the tunnel, which is till in the process of construction. Beckett is doubtful that Pascal’s interest isenvironmentally-based: Kanin watches him as he tries to locate Pascal in a Political Terrorist Database, but to no avail. Beckett is convinced she’s after something else…he’s right. Underneath the Currency Exchange House, a man and a security guard called Max are checking wiring having completed some complex re-routing. The other man, Lacombe phones his "lover" Pascal, and gives her the signal, whereby she restores the power. Ros has reached Security, and Ed comes across the dead tour guide, taking his security pass. The Security monitors are frazzled, but Ros rises to the challenge and starts attacking the equipment. Beckett and Kanin try to extract more information from Pascal, but she is saying nothing, lowering the deadline to 8 hours. She chides Travis, the nervous scientist, who is taking his time to familiarise himself with the system…Ros watches the scene, without sound, on a recovered Security Monitor. Ed joins her…. and tells Ros to direct the signal from her monitor to Beckett: this allows Kanin to recognise Travis. It also allows them all to see Pascal make a mobile phone call, which Beckett is able to intercept, ascertaining the location of the person she is phoning…someone in the Financial District. Travis notices power to the Security room, and sends Ekberg, who was supposed to have secured the compound, to intercept…she makes the mistake however of looking up at the Security Camera…

Making their escape through the Main Core, they are spotted by Ekberg, who shoots at them, hitting a container of super-conducting fluid in the process. In pursuit of his quarry he follows them through to the Turbine Room: Ros hides, while Ed diverts attention away from his colleague by pretending to be lost. As Ekberg is about to shoot Ed, Ros pushes him from behind, sending him tumbling to his untimely demise. Beckett is attempting to narrow his search of banks under threat: his only lead being that to take over a Power Plant his "thieves" must be after a LOT of money…whilst Pascal receives another offer, from an unknown individual. He has a number of clients who would be extremely interested in finding out more about the Isotope triggers that form the main part of the Plant’s Core Technology. All three of the Gizmos team hears the new player’s offer. However Beckett and Ekberg lose their signal, and don’t hear Pascal offer to consider the deal…for ten million. Beckett is able to augment the face of the mystery "buyer" and identifies him as Martin Kolvek: an arms dealer who wants thew technology for weapons of mass destruction. Ros finds a lone machine to work with, and with Ed’s help she begins to try and hack into the main Control Systems. She successfully accesses the systems, but needs to find a way to control them. Travis is finally the Master of the Power Grid, and shuts down areas with great accuracy…as Beckett watches, all the major banks are stripped of power, except one: the Currency Exchange House. He sets off to investigate, as Pascal agrees to Kolvek’s terms…

At the Currency House, Beckett’s arrival is treated with skepticism: Lacombe shows him around the "state of the art" computer system, which his Boss believes is foolproof. Lacombe explains the whole system is only controllable from inside the building and that in the event of a power failure the vault is sealed automatically. Called away, Lacombe nervously phones Pascal about Beckett’s visit: she tells him not to worry…as Ed confirms the call has been made to Beckett…he goes back into the building. Pascal calls Ekberg to check on his situation: Ed impersonates him to give them more time. Ros needs some passwords that only Alex would know: she goes to talk to him, with Ed providing her with a distraction: "Ekberg" will call the guard watching the hostages for backup, giving Ros the chance to talk. Using the "excuse" of dropping his pager, Beckett gets back to the Security Room in the Currency Exchange and plants a receiver. Sneaking downstairs, he waits for the change in security: the day shift leaves and Max comes on as the night shift. The other guards go off for a party, to celebrate one of the guard’s birthdays: Lacombe arrives with a gift…a semi-automatic weapon. Killing all the guards, he proceeds with his plan. Ros has reached the hostages, and as planned Ed removes the guard: whilst upstairs the laptop Ros has been using suddenly runs out of battery. Ed goes to find a replacement…and is captured by the same guard that he sent away from the hostages…

Ros and Alex get to the laptop and finds Ed, plus the battery, gone. Ros sends Alex out to find a replacement, as Ed is hauled up in front of Pascal…who cannot resist telling him they have been storing up power for one massive surge…on the Currency Exchange, destroying the systems. Pascal uses the power station to fool the Currency house’s Internal System into believing it is receiving normal data signals…and that nothing is wrong. The vault doors open on Pascal’s instructions from the Power Plant and the Security systems set up to stop them are useless. Ros realises that Beckett will deal with things at the Currency House: it’s her and Alex’s job to make sure no one gets their hands on the isotope triggers…. which is precisely what Pascal and Travis set off to do, leaving Ed handcuffed and trapped in the Control room. Alex explains that unplugging the triggers will send the reactor critical and create a 5-mile wide fireball… Back at the Currency House Beckett watches Lacombe and Max loading a security van, whilst at the plant Pascal watches Travis disengage the triggers…when she has them, Pascal shoots the scientist and leaves.

With nine minutes to return the triggers to their positions in the Reactor, Ros goes after the terrorist, as Ed manages to get himself free. Beckett finds and re-enables the lock on the safe Max is taking money from, managing to lock him in…with Lacombe getting away in the Security van, he gives chase. Ed and Alex meet up and between them and try to slow down the core reaction to give Ros more time…as Pascal enters the exit tunnel, and is confronted by Kolvek. Joining him in a four-wheel drive, Ros just misses their exit, but finds Ed’s bike…As Ed takes desperate measures to cool the core, using a pickaxe on the chambers of super-coolant. Ros manages to activate the main door to the tunnel, just before the four wheel drive crashes into it: retrieving the triggers, she dashes back on her bike, seconds before the van explodes…and Ed’s measures cool the core. Beckett asks one more favour of his friend: a river bridge he’ll need raising, as Ros begins the task of replacing the triggers. At the right moment Ed operates Beckett’s bridge, and Lancome’s escape is violently ended. With seconds on the clock Ros gets the triggers back in place…and disaster is averted.

Beckett’s within two moves of mating a chess computer, whilst Ed cleans his bike: suddenly the lights go out. Ros blames Alex, who’s telling her that she’s late…for a date with him.
