SYNOPSIS

Arriving at The Patrixon Private Clinic are President Rostov, his son Grigori and an attractive young woman. Beckett (who with Jan has been sent to escort them) believes is the President’s PA. Jan happily informs him that Natalya is in fact the President’s second wife, and that if he is contemplating anything more than a professional interest in the woman he should put such considerations very definitely to one side. The President has been brought to the private clinic for security reasons, and once inside is sent into a MRI Scanner for tests. The consultant believes that an operation is possible to save the President’s life, and the President in turn is keen to sign the Nuclear Decommissioning Treaty that has been set up by Jan as "payment" for the treatment. However, the operation must be conducted within 48 hours to ensure his survival. As a mystery gunman sets up his weapon on the roof opposite the Clinic, the consultant (Patrixon) shows the President a revolutionary new serum derived from the venom of an Amazonian Viper, which he believes will stabilise the President’s blood imbalance, which in itself could make any surgery fatal. Leaving the Clinic Beckett spots the red dot of a laser sight and dives to save the President from a hail of bullets…and narrowly avoids serious injury himself as he tries to stop the assassin from escaping…

Security footage from outside the clinic identifies the gunman as Shaun Driscoll, an ex-SAS officer, and the tracker Beckett was able to place on his car indicates that the assassin is currently stationary. Explaining the situation to the rest of the team, Beckett stresses the seriousness of their task with Rostov as President inheriting a sizable nuclear legacy, including deadly Medusa missiles (with multiple warheads). The medical treatment that Jan is overseeing will ensure that it is a British company that is responsible for the decommissioning of Rostov’s nuclear arsenal: but it will not be an easy task. Sending Ed and Alex off to track down Driscoll he stresses caution, whilst he and Ros go to a Trade Reception at Rostov’s Embassy. At the Embassy Ros meets Channing, who is at the Reception to foster new business contacts. Annoyed at his presence Beckett angrily tells Ros he assumed they were no longer seeing each other: and when he stupidly tells her she isn’t allowed a private life outside the Bureau Ros angrily leaves him. Going to meet Rostov Beckett is on more familiar territory. His own Head of Security, Varetsky is less than impressed with Beckett’s performance, claiming if it had been him protecting the President the assassin would not have escaped. As Ros introduces herself to Rostov, Beckett assures Varetsky that the assassin will soon be caught… Channing meanwhile is "selling" to Natalya, and has presented her with a charm bracelet inside which is contained a minute GPS satellite tracker designed by Ros. It’s Ros’ turn to be unimpressed with Channing’s treatment of the Reception as a trade fair, and Beckett’s opportunity to be smug…

Ed and Alex trace the assassin’s car to a company mysteriously named Conflict Hardware International. Breaking in under the guise of maintenance workers, the pair breaks into the Managing Director’s office. Bridget Kay’s suite is full of military hardware: guns and weaponry, but there is no apparent link to Driscoll. Searching through files, rubbish and the PC for clues Alex admits to Ed that despite initially being unsure of his commitment to both his job and his friends she is now convinced she can see through his jokey exterior to the more serious person beneath, and she is beginning to like what she sees. Both find evidence of a link between Rostov and Conflict Hardware: Ed discovers information on the safe transportation of Medusa missiles whilst Alex finds a list of clients who would be both willing and able to relieve Rostov of his nuclear arsenal. However their searching is interrupted by the return of Kay: Ed hides Alex and tries to bluff his way out of the situation, but fails miserably and again Alex saves the day by knocking Kay out and allowing them a means of escape. As they leave Driscoll enters, and Kay wonders how the pair managed to trace him to her. Driscoll is keen to eliminate the pair, but Kay suggests leaving them to their "man" at the Embassy instead…

Ros is checking out Varetsky’s security setup, and is satisfied with its operation. On the banks of monitors she spots Beckett talking to Ed. Beckett is convinced Bridget Kay must have a contact on the inside of the Embassy if the Medusa warheads are already on the open market, and Ed wonders if that contact is Rostov himself. Beckett dismisses the idea, knowing the President could have paid for a hundred operations with the proceeds. Signing off, he begins to play with the grand piano in the room he’s been talking in and is interrupted by Natalya, who is keen to thank him for saving her life. It is obvious she is very much in love with the aging President, and it’s also obvious that Beckett is enamoured with her. Asking where they met, Natalya tells him it was at a piano concert of hers: when Rostov’s first wife died it was her music that gave him hope to survive. Rostov interrupts them both reminding Natalya it is time for his injection: and as the President prepares for his shot of snake venom Ros teases Beckett on his musical tastes and his lack of pitch. As Natalya opens the safe and takes out the case of venom it becomes clear there is indeed a man inside the Embassy: and he has taken all the venom from the case…

Ed and Alex arrive at the Embassy, and Ed isn’t quite sure whether Alex is telling him that she likes him as a friend or as something more, but is willing to wait for an answer. The security tapes in Varetsky’s office are blank, and the machine switched off when the venom was stolen: Varetsky himself blames Madame Rostov, but Beckett is not so sure. Only she, Rostov, Grigori and Varetsky have keys to the safe… and as far as Beckett is concerned the Embassy is now unsafe to stay in. He suggests moving Rostov to the Bureau, which the leader is happy to agree to. Ros meanwhile has found another source for the serum, but arriving with Ed to retrieve it they find that someone has beaten them to it. It is Driscoll, who has destroyed nearly all the serum when Ros and Ed find him in the research lab. He is quick to use his semi-automatic weapon to eliminate all the remaining serum phials before making an escape, with Ed in hot pursuit. Ros is able to save some of the serum for use, but Ed is not so lucky in catching his quarry and the hitman gets away. Back at the Bureau Jan wonders which of Rostov’s entourage tipped off Driscoll to the alternative supply of serum, and urges Beckett to keep a close eye on everyone. Ros arrives with what is left and Jan asks her to administer the injection and not Natalya, who she believes is the traitor. It seems everyone but Beckett believes the President’s new wife is the one out to kill him ahead of his operation, and when Natalya asks to return to the Embassy for a few personal belongings everyone but Beckett suggests it’s a bad idea. However this doesn’t stop the Bureau Chief from offering to help, and as he leave Ed follows as his shadow. Ros is angry at Beckett’s stubbornness and his refusal to listen to her or anyone else, knowing that one day it could be his undoing…

Arriving at the Embassy before Beckett and Natalya, Kay and Driscoll pull up in a large van and enter without hindrance. Moments later the pair arrive from the Bureau, with Ed in close proximity. Returning to the Music Room to collect her scores Beckett fails to spot a gas cannister thrown into the room, which knocks both him and the President’s wife out cold. Outside Ed is oblivious to the situation until he spots Driscoll and Kay loading their van with a packing case. Setting off in pursuit on his bike Driscoll has a surprise for him, and the spiked balls he throws from the back of the van do their job and stop Ed’s bike in it’s tracks… Later, Driscoll makes his demands: the Medusa missiles for the lives of Natalya and Beckett. Rostov, watching the broadcast at the Bureau, is mortified at the ransom demand, and the two hours they have been given to make the choice. Kay too is concerned with the shortness of the demand: Driscoll is convinced the President will not play ball, and between them they conspire to make sure the President dies, whatever happens. Grigori is concerned that his father is not in the best place for his health, and wonders what his father will do now his wife is being held to ransom. Rostov is pragmatic however, knowing his wife would want him to finish the job he has started with the decommissioning. Ros remembers the GPS bracelet Channing gave Natalya, and asks Rostov if his wife is still wearing it: as she is, Ros can use it to locate her and Beckett’s position. However, she needs Ed to drop into Channing’s home to pick up the exact frequency the GPS is transmitting from. Ed is being bandaged at the Embassy following his abortive attempt at following Kay and Driscoll, but is well enough to make the trip.

At the farmhouse acting as Kay and Driscoll’s hideout, Natalya comes to in Beckett’s lap. The pair have been chained together, and are trapped in the attic of the farmhouse. Ed arrives at Channing’s luxury home, and the businessman hands Ed the transceiver he needs to locate Natalya. Channing has a large amount of Ros’ equipment lying around, and admits to Ed that Ros gets lonely in her new home. He hopes that soon she will take the plunge and move in with him full-time… Rostov arrives at the Clinic, this time in an Ambulance, as Ed arrives to give Ros the GPS transceiver. Leaving Ed and Alex to guard the President, Ros goes in search of Beckett, asking Ed to keep the knowledge of her stuff at Channing’s place a secret. Driscoll meanwhile has also arrived at the Hospital and is making a more unorthodox entry… Beckett and Natalya are talking: Natalya hopes that her husband is not worrying about her, and imagines Beckett’s wife must worry about him all the time. Beckett admits there is no-one special in his life, but when pressed by Natalya admits he’d like something more than a professional relationship with Ros. However he’s convinced she wouldn’t feel the same way about him…and may not get a chance to tell her if Bridget Kay has her way. She explains that the bomb set above their heads will be armed when anyone steps on the pressure pad located on the only exit or entry to the attic, and the moment anyone steps off the pad the bomb will detonate.

Preparations are well advanced for Rostov’s operation, and Alex assures the ailing President his wife will be waiting for him when he comes round after surgery. Driscoll is preparing to try once more to eliminate his target, but is thwarted by Ed, Alex, and a blind… Beckett meanwhile is ticking off the list of possible moles inside Rostov’s camp: it its obvious that Natalya is not the Mole, and Varetsky has nothing to gain from killing his employer, as he would never succeed to the Presidency… Ros has found the farmhouse and watches as Kay packs to leave. Deliberately setting off Kay’s car alarm (though having to use brute force as opposed to electronic gadgetry) it is a simple task for Ros to knock out Bridget, and she enters the farmhouse. As Rostov enters the theatre for surgery Ros inadvertently triggers the bomb pressure pad as she arrives to rescue Beckett and Natalya. Things go from bad to worse as she throws her lockpicks to Beckett to free himself and hits a beam, knocking the pick just out of reach. Beckett uses Natalya’s shoe to try and reach the picks… Varetsky is checking for assassins in the Operating area, and annoys the consultant Patrixon for his lack of trust. However Alex sees a "doctor" wearing anything but regulation theatre footwear that Varetsky fails to spot, and goes to warn Ed…. who arrives in time to stop Driscoll eliminating the President, but not before Varetsky is shot and Patrixon is knocked unconscious. However, the operation still is in jeopardy: for Grigori, with a gun in his hand, has other ideas about his father’s health. Natalya’s shoe and Beckett’s dexterity get the lockpicks, but unfortunately they can’t stop a recovered Kay from threatening Ros with a gun. Unwilling to move, Kay knows she can find a way to make Ros step off the pressure pad, but the distraction has been enough for Beckett and Natalya to free themselves and for Beckett to remove the bomb from above them. Beckett drops the bomb at Bridget’s feet, Ros steps off the pressure pad and Kay meets her maker…

Grigori’s real reasons for killing his father become clear: he holds his father responsible for his mother’s death and Natalya for ignoring his mother in her final days. Ed sees a way of distracting Grigori as he prepares a lethal injection for his father, and opens an oxygen feed attached to a mask close to the smoking remains of Rostov’s cigar. Finally enough oxygen is in the air to cause the remains to re-ignite, and the mini-explosion that follows gives Ed the chance to jump Grigori and stab him with his own needle. The fight continues on the roof, and as the lethal poison hits Grigori’s system he falls off the roof… Beckett contacts Ed and tells him that Natalya will be back in time to watch her husband regain consciousness. Ed tells him in turn that Patrixon predicts the operation will be a success. Natalya also tells Beckett as they leave that if she was Ros and Beckett asked her out, she would say yes…

At the Bureau, Ed tries to ask Alex to share some takeaway with him (with little success) whilst Beckett is forced to grudgingly thank Channing for saving his life, via Natalya’s GPS bracelet. Ros then presents Beckett with his own GPS tie pin, and suggests now all he needs is a decent tie to go with it…
